How to Choose the Right Support Jack

Picking the right jack comes down to three questions: how much clearance you have, how much weight you're supporting, and whether you're actively lifting or just holding a load in place.

  1. Measure for shoring height. From supporting surface to bottom of beam or joist.
  2. Detiermin load support requirement. Long spans or main beams may requier more shores or higher load capacity shores. Speak to a local engineer for assitance.
  3. Decide if you're lifting or just supporting. Ellis Ligth Duty, Heavy Duty and Stealth Shores come with the Ellis pateneted Lifting Nut Assembly. Increasing lifting capacity to up to 10x over standard jack posts.
  4. Ellis Shore Tops and Base Plate Extentions may help too.

Installation Basics

Every jack in this collection installs the same basic way: measure your total shoring height, set the jack on a solid footing, position it plumb under the joist or beam, and raise it slowly. Lock the jack in place once you've reached level with a 6mm allen wrench.

FAQs

What's the difference between a house leveling jack and a crawl space support jack?

They're often the same product. A house leveling jack actively lifts a sagging floor or beam back into position, while a crawl space support jack is typically only used to support loads and dont have the ability to efficiently lift structures. Ellis jacks with thrust bearings (like the Light and Heavy Duty Lifting Shores) are built for easier adjustment during the lifting phase and can be locked in place for long term support; jacks without bearings are a lower-cost option once you're just holding the load.

How much weight can a floor support jack hold?

It depends on the model, Ellis floor support jacks range from 15,000 lbs (Mini Jack, Timber Jack) up to 56,000 lbs (Heavy Duty Steel Lifting Shore).

Can I use these jacks for permanent support, or just temporary lifting?

Both. Ellis screw jacks and steel shores are rated and commonly installed for permanent support (replacing a jack post or lally column) as well as temporary shoring during a repair.

Do I need a base plate or footing under the jack?

Yes, for permanent installations, jacks should sit on a solid footing (Base Plate Extension, concrete pier, footing pad, or equivalent) to prevent settling. Base Plate Extensions are available if you need a larger footprint on an existing jack.
